Collections Performance

Reading your practice's collections performance

Three indicators — collection percentage, AR ratio, and DSO — describe how effectively your outpatient therapy practice turns services into collected revenue. Here's what each one means.

Collection Percentage

How much of your earned revenue actually gets collected.

Collection percentage measures how effectively your practice is collecting the revenue available after contractual adjustments — the amount you've genuinely earned, not your gross billed charges. A lower-than-expected figure can point to write-offs, denials, or balances that aren't being worked. It's one of the clearest signals of whether your billing process is converting services into cash.

AR Ratio

Whether your outstanding balances look reasonable for your size.

Your AR ratio compares total accounts receivable to your average monthly charges. It gives a quick, size-adjusted sense of whether the money owed to you is reasonable — or whether a larger-than-expected slice of your revenue is sitting unpaid. A high ratio doesn't diagnose the cause on its own, but it tells you where to look.

Days Sales Outstanding (DSO)

How quickly services turn into collected revenue.

DSO estimates the average number of days it takes your practice to collect on the services you provide. A faster cycle means more predictable cash flow and less strain on day-to-day operations; a slower one can quietly compound. During your scorecard review, you'll benchmark the actual number against MBC's scorecard to see where you stand.

How to read them together

No single number tells the whole story. Collection percentage shows whether earned revenue is being collected; AR ratio shows whether outstanding balances look reasonable; DSO shows how quickly cash moves through the practice. Read together, they give a practical picture of revenue-cycle health — and where a closer look may be worthwhile before 2027 planning.
